Breathing Easier After Treatment

Recovery depends on the problem. A chest drain usually stays for a few days until the lung expands fully. Breathing exercises, good pain control and early walking help the lungs recover and prevent infection.

Common Questions

Thoracic Surgery FAQs

What is thoracic surgery?

Thoracic surgery is surgery of the chest – the chest wall, lungs and the space around the lungs (pleura). It includes treatment of chest injuries, drainage of air, blood, fluid or pus, and operations on the lungs.

What is a chest drain?

A chest drain is a thin tube placed between the ribs to remove air, blood, fluid or pus from around the lung so that the lung can expand again. It is placed under local anaesthesia and usually stays for a few days.

Do rib fractures need surgery?

Most rib fractures heal with pain control, breathing exercises and rest. Surgery is needed only in a few cases, such as multiple fractures affecting breathing or injury to the lung.

What causes fluid around the lungs?

Fluid around the lungs (pleural effusion) can be caused by infections such as TB or pneumonia, heart or kidney problems, or cancer. Tests on the fluid help find the cause.

What is empyema?

Empyema is a collection of pus around the lung, usually after pneumonia. It needs drainage and antibiotics, and sometimes surgery to clean the space.

Is lung cancer surgery done at Pluto Hospital?

Specialised lung cancer surgery is usually done at dedicated centres. Our team will evaluate you, do the necessary tests and coordinate the next steps.

Is cashless insurance available?

Cashless treatment is available with Star Health and other empanelled insurers and TPAs, subject to your policy terms and insurer approval.
